Living in Dyersburg and Dyer County

Dyer County is located in the northwest part of Tennessee. The estimated population of Dyer County in 2011 was 38,192.

Our local newspaper is called The State Gazette. The paper is fairly cautious in its reporting of local events and majority of the State Gazette’s content is about local topics. They offer some content free of charge on their website for anyone wanting to stay current on events relevant to the area. Dyersburg does not have a television news channel.

Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) is the local college in the area. DSCC is a good place to start a college education or to restart an education. The campus is extremely well kept and the staff is friendly and helpful. DSCC is an educational resource for all ages, having programs in the summer for children and community educational classes for those wishing to pursue hobbies.

Entertainment is a common complaint of the residents Dyer County and the surrounding area. Dyersburg has a theater, the Carmike Cinema 9, which features 3-D and all the latest in movie tech. There is a skating ring, bowling alley, and several golf courses. The local YMCA is engaged and offers many activities for the community. For the outdoorsman, there are almost year-round activities. Hunting and fishing are common pastimes in the area. There are places to go off-roading, both with ATV’s and off-road vehicles. The county has an airport that is suitable for the private pilot or those who would like to learn.

Many houses are for sale on the Dyer County Real Estate market. Out of these, there are numerous foreclosures and REO properties. Dyersburg realtors are very eager to help, with both seller and buyer agents servicing the area.

Public and private schools are in the area for grades up to and including middle school. There are no private high schools that I am aware of. These area private schools are faith-based schools. There are also some home school groups in the area that share resources to make homeschooling easier.

There are many places of worship in Dyer County. Baptist and Pentecostal denominations are the most common. Most major Christian denominations are represented within the county and many non-denominational congregations have established locations. Congregations often help in aid for individuals in the community that are in need due to illness or tragedy.

Living in Dyer County can be a rewarding, wonderful experience, or can by a dreadfully boring, miserable existence. I know people that consider it each way. The Dyersburg Topix website will describe both of these experiences, although I would not recommend it for any serious discussion. The Dyersburg Topix Forum is a habitation of slanderous misinformation and accusations as well as a den of profanity.
